THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor 3:17 NKJV

“Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you Senators, Representatives, Judges, fellow citizens, here and everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure for our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice, peace and union – a union depending not on the constraint of force but UPON THE LOVING DEVOTION OF A FREE PEOPLE, and that all things may be so ordered and settled UPON THE BEST AND SUREST FOUNDATIONS that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generations.”

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President, Inaugural Address 1877

Michael S. Heiser, in his great book, THE UNSEEN REALM, makes the case very clearly that salvation in the OT was dependent upon loyalty to the God of Israel. David committed some of the most egregious of sins – murder and adultery – and yet he repented at the confrontation with Nathan, proving again even in humiliation his loyalty to the God of Israel. In the millennial reign of Christ, David will again be king of Israel (Ez. 37:24). The Lord is gracious and merciful – He puts up with a lot of ‘stuff’ – but loyalty to Him is paramount.

Political freedom is downstream of spiritual freedom. Spiritual freedom was bought and fully paid for you and I in our new birth experience of being born again through the finished work of our Lord. He and His work are the surest foundation of our personal liberty.  Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty. What does He require of us? Loyalty – the loving devotion of a free people.

We want to secure for ourselves and for our posterity the blessings of liberty. President Hayes, obviously a born again one, and here speaking prophetically in his inaugural address he gives the two keys to those benefits for all of us: the loving devotion of a free people, and the best and surest foundations. As I elaborate on these truths, let me state clearly the spiritual principles behind them. We must see things from God’s perspective with the greatest clarity that we understand.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance. Ps 33:12 NKJV

There are two realms in which we live – the clearly seen physical realm, and the just as relevant but unseen spiritual realm. The spiritual realm controls the physical realm. So, when we talk about a ‘free people’ we must ask, who are free people? And to whom is their loving devotion directed? The other great principle we must understand is this – there are ONLY two types of people in the world – born again ones, and ones that are not born again. Race, gender, ethnicity, skin color, democrats, republicans, Giants or Dodger fans – all that is meaningless from God’s perspective.

Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:36 NKJV

Referring back to President Hayes prophetic word, who are the free people? The free people are the ones whom Jesus has made free – you and I. We are the spiritually free ones, and because of that we are the ones who hold the great responsibility of preserving and extending political freedom to our posterity and beyond. Remember that the physical realm is downstream from the spiritual realm. What occurs in one place will occur in the other.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:30 NKJV

Hayes said – the loving devotion of a free people. Loving devotion to whom? In the OT it was loving devotion or loyalty to the God of Israel, who was as well triune in nature as Heiser also so powerfully pointed out in his book. What is loving devotion? There is a passion involved there, which is why Song of Solomon, Ephesians and other scripture compare our relationship with God to the relationship of two young lovers, a man and his wife. Do you see why Jesus rebuked the lukewarm church? A lukewarm relationship between a young man and his wife is not going to last very long!

The question is – are we, the free ones, passionate like a young lover with ABBA, YESHUA and the RUACH  KODESH or are we lukewarm? We can infer that the freedom of our country, or countries depends upon the fervency of our answer. If we get the ‘passion’ right the ‘loving devotion’ will take care of itself…

Hayes spoke about ‘the best and surest foundations.’ What are those foundations? I really like Lightbearers logo, how it turned out. We put a lot of time and thought into every detail of it to make it the best expression of our ministry in a visual format. For instance, it has a sword and shield, and the sword is descending. It’s not an upright sword, it is a descending one. The descending sword is the RHEMA word of God coming from Heaven. At the very base of it is the words THE WAY – THE TRUTH – THE LIFE. Who is the way, the Truth, the Life? Jesus, of course! He is the best and surest, the only foundation.

The great foundation of the Word, especially relating to who we are in Christ – the Church Epistles – sets the bedrock upon which we build our lives. Every aspect of life, every consideration, the guidance as to how to make the best possible decisions is all found in the Word, especially for us in Romans through Thessalonians, the great Church epistles. This is not to say that other sections of the Word aren’t important or necessary, not at all, but to be grounded in that knowledge of who we are in the resurrected Christ and who He is in us as the Christ, the Head of the Body, you must go there. Ignorance of the great knowledge of the Church Epistles has hampered the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and practical growth of the believer since day one. Just reading the epistles is so key to having the surest and best foundation!

I stayed with my friends Henry and Sylvia a while back, and I made a great discovery early in the morning. As I got up before dawn to meet with the Lord in praise and thanksgiving, there I found my friend Sylvia, up before me, with her big Bible open, reading the Word! She had even turned the coffee on, bless God forever. She has the best and surest foundation!

In a previous article THE PROBLEM OF FREEDOM, we talked about the need to get your whole neighborhood, your whole sphere of influence, born again of God’s Spirit. Then their nature would hunger for freedom, and they would be comfortable with nothing else. Then you could talk to them about conservative, American principles, and then they might listen. But President Hayes has directed us to the other side of the coin, concerning the loving devotion of spiritually free people, loving God with the passion of a young lover, and having the best and surest foundation in the knowledge our Lord Jesus, who He is, and who we are in Him, both individually and collectively as the Body of Christ.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col 3:16 NKJV

It’s time to get back to that I-can’t-wait-to-see-You relationship with the triune God, giving Him the compliment of your undivided attention daily in devotion. Nothing says, ‘I love you!’ like undivided attention! Then the wonderful foundation acquired by reading and meditating on the Word of God. People say to me, “How much of the Word should I read daily?” To be full of the Word of God, think of it filling your body from your feet first all the way to your head. When it starts to run out your mouth – out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks – then you are full of the Word of God. 😉

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. Ps 127:1 NKJV

Today, July 5th, the first full day of the 250th year of American freedom and independence, let’s acknowledge the One who gave us such grace, mercy, joy and freedom. I love our military – both of my sons are Air Force veterans – but for people to say that American freedom is due to our military, is a big mistake. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman, military man, first responder, watches in vain. Now, does the Lord USE those military and first responders, our sheep dogs, to help keep us sheep safe? BAAAA Yes! Absolutely! But the real first line of defense and offense against physical and spiritual enemies, for your family and nation, is you and your fellow intercessors, those free people in loving devotion to our God and who have built their lives on the best and surest foundation of Christ through the Word. Through you, and them, the Lord will allow freedom to reign for our children, grandchildren and generations to come. Amen? Love you!

Remember dear ones, we must be about our Father’s business…
