Overview of the Gifts 

1 Corinthians 12:1 – 11 

Verse one – God does not want us ignorant – meaning we are to be very knowledgeable. We need instruction – complement in 14:38 – tying chapters 12-14 together. 

Pneumatikos – spiritual matters. 

Verse two – can’t go any further than you are led. 

Verse three – Corinthian tradition of cursing their gods. 

Speaking by the spirit of god – tongues, interpreation and prophecy. 

Could never be used to curse jesus. Speaking by the spirit of god is making jesus lord. 

Verses four through six. 

Gifts – charisma – gifts of God’s grace.  

Diversities, differences – diaresis – differences through God’s choice or option. 

Spirit – the Holy Spirit, Lord – the Lord Jesus Christ, God – God the father 

Administrations – diakonia – ways of running to serve. 

Everyone has a ministry in the body of christ which god gives you as a gift. 

Be faithful and god will promote you. Bloom where you are planted. 

Operations – energema – energizings, anointings. Each ministry is a gift for you to walk in for that season. Times change, seasons can change, anointings can change. 

The gifts of the Spirit are there to help you fulfil your ministry. 

Verses seven through eleven. 

Verse seven – manifestation – phanerosis – evidence, exhibition, demonstration.  

Spirit – the holy spirit in your spirit. 

‘Is given’ – hence, a gift. 

‘To every man’ – every born again child of god. 

‘To profit withal’ – to benefit the individual and the church 

Verses eight through ten 

‘For to one’ – benefit or profit – not refering to individual believers, but to the benefit a particular gift will bring. 

All believers can flow in all nine of the gifts of the Spirit. 

Listing of the gifts – numerical usage in the word. 

Word of wisdom – 1 – unity or commencement. 

Word of knowledge – 2 – establishment or agreement 

Faith – 3 – completeness 

Gifts of healings – 4 – the world, god’s creative work. 

Workings of miracles – 5 – grace 

Prophecy – 6 – human error, spiritual imperfection. 

Discerning of spirits – 7 – spiritual perfection or maturity. 

Diverse kinds of tongues – 8 – a new beginning 

Interpretaion of tongues – 9 – complete completeness. Last gift revealed. 

Verse eleven – as the spirit wills – not as the person wills. 

We are to pray for and covet the gifts but we cannot will them to come, with the exception of speaking in tongues. 1 Cor 14:15
